Music...

Submitted by theman on Sat, 06/17/2017 - 23:37

Sitting here listening to some house music and thinking (again) that I should publish some of mine. If I did it would probably not be me, but rather some contrived identity; this itself has always been a rabbit hole. The Personna finally occurred to me: OWG  (which stand for “Old White Guy”, but is also a play on OMG, or Oh My God…).

Passwords...

Submitted by theman on Sun, 05/28/2017 - 12:44

There has been a trend away from passwords and onto other 'simpler' identity management systems. I quote the simpler because for those of us who do not want to intertwine every aspect of our lives it is anything but.

I realize there are many people for whom the convenience of letting Facebook or another social media platform be the cornerstone of their digital life is a blessing. I know that I am in the minority when I describe using a good password management tool like LastPass to generate unique, secure passwords for every site. People give me quizzical looks and wonder "why would you want to do that?" Unfortunately, I have real-world examples of the losses that can be inflicted when security is not taken seriously.

My point here is that developers shouldn't shortchange their users' security: while you can offer 3rd party API access convenience, don't eliminate other traditional forms of security, preferably with user-controlled TFA and encryption. If it is done by design on the front-end it's easily managed and will prevent the types of news-worthy breaches caused by bolting-on a poor solution late in the game.

RIP...

While 2017 has been a year full of musical departures, none was so sad to me as the news of Gregg Allman losing his long, tough battle. You will be missed…

Persuasions...

When the conversation drifts political people inevitably ask what party I support. As I have long championed, and continue to attest, I am a Republican. More recently I have taken to describing myself as a "Lincoln Republican". As this video illustrates, this distinction may be superfluous:

Progress...

I have been working on core structure and built the first static page. Testing now to see how well mobile editing works. So far, vastly improved from the last version!

I don't know that this will translate into my posting more...

Pendulum

Submitted by theman on Sun, 05/21/2017 - 10:14

Tonight Linda and I went out and split dinner at a local Mexican restaurant (La Hacienda). I listened while she talked about treatment decisions she is wrestling without offering an opinion. This is a skill that I’m working on; answering questions and solving problems is, after all, what I do.

After detailing various aspects and options she stopped, looked at me and apologized saying ”we never planned on any of this…” I agreed that we hadn't, that the pendulum of had our life had swung further out than either of us ever expected.

Then again, the swing back should have a lot of good momentum. We've played the lottery, right? This is but an arc in our balance. The vow I said when we married bound us together for better or for worse, in sickness and in health. We have seen it all together: joy and great joy and heartache. My answer is still the same today: I do.

I originally captured this in my Google Drive Docs on May 21, 2017, as my site was offline; I happened across it today while looking for other things. Same as it ever was...

Process...

Life is a study in process or in patience. Perhaps both. Then again, for many: neither.

As I do not intend to replace this website again I am building it slowly, deliberately. Thank you for your patience! If you have suggestions, I'd love to hear them: use my contact form to send your thoughts.

Stray dogs...

Submitted by theman on Wed, 05/10/2017 - 23:55

I thought about titling this post Internet spam but I thought this to be more fitting. Since reloading Drupal as my blog's engine I have dozens — yes, dozens — of account signup requests.

I doubt I've suddenly become either famous or popular. Infamous? Still up for grabs…

Regardless, there are countless bots and/or actual people who watch for opportunities to takeover un-secured or otherwise unprotected servers and websites.

You have not found one…

Addendum: In the past I have had family & friends apply for accounts so that they are able to post comments (ie: harass me) about things I put online. Given the afore mentioned barrage of user accounts being applied for (370 as of this post, actually) I will suggest you send me a personal email (ie: not via the site's contact form) and let me know you wish to do otherwise I will miss your's...

Old habits...

Submitted by theman on Sun, 05/07/2017 - 22:27

It may be true that they are hard to break. Or it may be that I've done all this testing before and, along the way, found something that works well. Regardless I have returned to Drupal for my site's CMS. A couple of truths:

  • It will take while to to get it all back together...
  • I may or may not put up any old content...
  • If there is something you want then you should email me...

Okay, so now: back to work!
