Google Voice Widget Hack
Posted February 6th, 2010 by sclathropThere are lots of people (including me) frustrated by the inflexible Google Voice “Call Me” widget. Since I added it to this website it caused the horizontal page scrolling to remain active as my placement ensured the content would always exceed 100% of the available page width. Satire at its finest... or is it?
Posted February 3rd, 2010 by sclathropThis clip is hilarious, even if it does lampoon the recent Supreme Court decision regarding legal entities’ right to engage in political activism. While I agree with the Court's majority I can appreciate the reservations expressed in the message: Click here to Read More »
Geek Hero: Ed Thorp
Posted February 2nd, 2010 by sclathropThe few of you who periodically read my decidedly nonperiodic blog know that I regularly find inspiration while listening to WHYY's Fresh Air. Today's show was doubly so, as Terry Gross interviewed mathematical paragon Edward O. Thorp. Click here to Read More »
Newt, the Orator (updated)
Posted December 28th, 2009 by sclathropMany applaud our President's oratory skills, and I agree; however, the messages have not always been those I agree with. So too with Newt Gingrich; his messages I have at time found divisive and unpalatable. These days he seems to be striking a more reasonable - or reasoned - stance, and reminds us all of the responsibility we owe our republic and ourselves: Click here to Read More »

Amendment 28
Posted November 10th, 2009 by sclathropMy Aunt Cindy often forwards me emails espousing certain conservative political views. Many make me chuckle, others make me groan and occasionally one makes me go "hmmmm". Today's was the latter, in which its author was proposing adoption of the following as Amendment 28 to the US Constitution:
Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators or Representatives, and Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States. Xpen$er
Posted October 12th, 2009 by sclathropOne of the many little projects and tasks I worked on during my holiday today was finding a new application for tracking my expenses. This is an area in which I have long been in need of significant improvement, and now that I carry a BlackBerry my first thought (naturally) was to find an application that could run on it and sync data to my PCs.
I was underwhelmed by the offerings in both freeware and paid applications available for this task. Then I stumbled across the article 5 Must Have Email Addresses in your Blackberry on blackberryfreeware.com. First on the list was Xpen$er, billed as “an online expense and report application.” Curious, I read the TOS and then signed up for an account. Click here to Read More »
Birds on the Wires
Posted September 15th, 2009 by sclathropDuring my drive home tonight I heard this story on NPR of how seeing birds arranged on a wire fence inspired Brazilian composer Jarbas Agnelli to arrange this piece: Click here to Read More »
Splash!
Posted August 31st, 2009 by sclathropWell. lately I've been busy — equally so have the spammers! I guess that one could take it as a compliment that so many (spam) comment entries are made on their personal blog/webpage… even some that appear to be manually crafted as to avoid automatic filtration systems. In my case, the filtration is manual, and tonight I had to go through five pages of comment postings (~20 per page) making sure I didn't delete any legitimate voices from the din of diatribe. Congressional Logic
Posted August 18th, 2009 by sclathropThis morning's ramblings took me over to On the Fence Films, producers of “a new breed of political documentary which informs, entertains and considers different points of view one might not often encounter in The New York Times or on CBS News.” The following clip is a perfectly irreverent illustration of the illogical ways in which federalized systems solve problems, in this case: funding children's health insurance.
